The client was wanting to expand their current home for their growing family which would include a larger living room and kitchen. As primary spaces for family and entertaining purposes, the design approach combined the program into a minimalistic open volume. This develops a physical link between the spaces for clear circulation and gathering. It also creates opportunities for maximizing ceiling heights, glazing for sufficient daylight/views and exterior roof deck. To create a large open space, required a unique engineering challenge to free the space from structure. Custom exposed trusses span through the space creating a dynamic overhead plane. In response to the simplistic form, a limited material selection was used. On the exterior, a wood rainscreen contrast with the brick of the existing home. The interior works with a light color palette of concrete countertops, white cabinets and hardwood floors that compliment and contrast the dark trusses above.
